Getting started

Updated October 3, 2026

Create an account

Go to Sign up and enter your name, email address and a password (at least 10 characters), or sign up with GitHub. Confirm the address with the code Yard emails you. If someone invited you, open the link in their invitation instead: you join their organization straight away.

Set up your organization

The first time you sign in, Yard walks you through five steps. Every one of them can be changed later in Settings.

  1. Organization: its name and the address it lives at (useyard.app/<your-org>).
  2. GitHub: install the Yard GitHub App on the account that owns your repositories. You can skip this and do it later from Settings → Repositories.
  3. Storage: where workspace files are backed up (Cloudflare R2, Amazon S3 or storage Yard manages) and how long deleted projects and archived workspaces are kept. Bucket credentials are entered later in Settings → Storage & git.
  4. Models: connect an agent. Agents run with each person's own account, inside containers: sign in to the one you use (Claude Code, Codex or Cursor); teammates connect theirs from their account page.
  5. Invite team: send invitations by email or copy an invite link.

Connect a runner

A workspace needs a runner: the machine where its files, containers and agents live. An organization admin registers one under Runners in the organization's sidebar. Yard shows a one-line command with a token to run on the machine; once it connects, the runner shows as online and new workspaces can use it. Connect a runner has the details.

Open a workspace

From the workspace menu in the header, choose New workspace…, give it a name, pick the runner it lives on (and whether it may use the runner's GPU) and, when the organization has several, the storage bucket. The workspace opens on its canvas. From there:

  • paste or drop in images, files and links, or start a note;
  • add a repository from the toolbar;
  • invite people to the workspace from Share;
  • select the blocks that describe a task and choose Create spec → to start a project.

Canvas basics and your first project walk through both.
