Files
A workspace is a real directory on its runner. Everything you upload lands there, and so does anything an agent writes. Yard shows those files on the canvas, in the sidebar and in a full Files view.
Uploading
Choose Upload in the canvas toolbar, drop files on the canvas, or paste
an image. Images become image blocks; anything else becomes a file block. A
file can be at most 200 MB. The block appears at once and fills in when the
upload finishes. Uploaded files go to the workspace's uploads/ folder.
You can also drop files into a note, where they become attachments.
Previews on the canvas
A file block shows what is in the file, sized to the block:
- Markdown, rendered;
- plain text, and code with syntax highlighting and line numbers (HTML, SVG and similar files are shown as code, never rendered);
- images, video and audio;
- PDFs, in your browser's own viewer.
Other kinds show a plain card with the name, size and type. Long text shows
only its beginning. Double-click the block, or press Enter, to see the
whole preview; it has a Download button.
To keep a block small, choose Hide preview from its … menu. It then shows only the file's name, path, size and type. Show preview brings it back.
The Files section in the sidebar
The sidebar has a FILES section with the directory of the canvas you are on: the workspace, or on a project's page that project's directory with its checkouts to unfold. Each worktree shows its branch; a read-only checkout is marked read-only. It follows changes on the runner as they happen.
The section scrolls on its own and its header stays on screen. Click the header to fold it to the bottom of the sidebar; drag the line above it to give it more or less of the sidebar's height.
- Drag a row onto the canvas to make a block for that file. On a touch
screen, press and hold first.
Esccancels the drag. - Each row has a menu: Add to canvas, Open in Files, and copying or moving the file between a project and the workspace.
- Open ↗ opens the full Files view.
- Pick several rows with
⌘/Ctrl-click, or a range withShift-click. A bar above the tree then offers Add to chat, which attaches them to your next chat message, Delete, which asks first and deletes folders with everything in them, and Clear.DeleteandEscon a row do the same. Reference clones cannot be deleted from, nor Yard's own folders,repos/or a project's directory.
The Files view
Open it from the sidebar's Open ↗, from Open in Files on a file or image block, or by clicking a file name in a chat reply. ← Canvas takes you back, and the Files / Git switch moves to the Git view.
The menu at the top picks Which files: the workspace, a repository's reference copy (read-only), a project's directory, or one of a project's checkouts (its worktrees, and read-only checkouts marked as such). The tree is on the left and the open file on the right.
Editing and saving
Text files open in a code editor with syntax highlighting. Edit, then press
Save or ⌘/Ctrl+S. The path bar says whether the file is saved or has
unsaved changes. Leaving with unsaved changes asks first.
If someone else, or an agent, changed the same file meanwhile, Yard merges the two. When the changes clash, the file keeps its current version and the clash waits for review; the footer shows a conflicts count.
Some files cannot be edited here:
- a repository's reference copy is read-only; changes are made in a project's worktree;
- a project's read-only checkout can be read but not changed; Make
writable in the project's Git tab (or
yard worktree add <repo>in its terminal) puts it on the project's branch; - binary files and very large files are shown, not edited;
- viewers, and everyone while the runner is offline, see files read-only.
Hidden files
Files and folders whose names start with a dot are left out of the trees. Choose Show hidden files in the … menu of the sidebar section or the Files view to show them. The setting is remembered in this browser. A link to a hidden file still opens it.
Downloading
Use Download in a file block's expanded view, or Download on a file attached to a note. While the runner is offline, images and files are served from the workspace's stored copy when your organization has storage set up.
